President’s Message

Dear Country Club Vistas II Community Members

You may or may not be aware of a situation that presented itself to our community this last month. We recently had a Down’s Syndrome minor who was enrolled in school living in a home here at CCVII.  The mother and son were refugees living here temporarily until the Immigration Court made a ruling on their case.  The mother wanted her son to attend school to keep his abilities stable. The matter was presented to me by the homeowner, a relative of the minor and minor’s mother. I initially gave permission for this unique and temporary situation. I felt that it was the right thing to do in my heart and gave permission to the family so they could avoid more difficulties.

It soon became clear that this was not as simple as allowing this disabled minor and his mother to stay with their relative, an owner in our POA.

Currently, this minor and his mother are no longer living with the owners’ sister. For those association members involved and for those of you who wondered, they have found another safe, and satisfactory housing situation. At this point the Down’s Syndrome boy is attending school. Additionally, the home owner has expressed her apologies and wants to make sure she is following the CC&Rs.

Many of you have expressed concern over the last two weeks regarding this situation, and due to several factors, I was unable to respond directly or individually to you, for that I apologize.

First, I do apologize if I appeared defensive regarding this situation. I felt I had made the right decision and needed to protect the child, and then felt I needed to protect myself and my own position, thinking I had done the right thing.

Secondly, I would like to extend an apology to anyone I may have hurt. Again, my position was that I had made the right decision concerning the child, and I wanted to see that child safe and in a non-disruptive situation, as that is always the best way to have a positive impact on any child with a disability.

When I signed the letter allowing this, I did not realize I had crossed a line nor that it would cause such a problem. I have held the position of president in many organizations, and in many diverse types of organizations, and making decisions like this would have been part of my job. I have learned that is not the case here and am happy to continue learning how best to serve our POA and work with our Board Members.

Our POA Board has been working hard to connect and work in a positive way with our POA and community. We have successfully stayed connected through Covid and we will continue to work hard to make Country Club Vistas II a place we are happy to call home. We have so much to be proud of: a lot of new members, houses are never on the market long, we have lower dues than we had a few years back, we are working with Pima county to maintain our roads and alleys, we have more neighbors connecting with each other than we have had in the past, and we are always working on ways to stay in touch with the membership.  If we slip up, we own it. And today, I am owning it. I slipped up and wanted to let you know I never meant to hurt anyone or miss the CC&R’s rule.

I hope to see as many of you that can be there at our annual meeting in January. We are still zooming, due to more Covid variants, but need your attendance to complete our business for the membership. I hope you all have a happy December and can enjoy your holidays. I am enjoying watching all the decorations going up and cannot wait to see the winners in our CCV2 decorating contest.

Sincerely,

—
